Looking for a calm, beautiful place to paddle? French Lake is the perfect spot—whether you’re brand new to kayaking or canoeing, heading out with little ones, or just looking to relax and drift. Located right on the lake, Sunbury Oromocto Park & Campground gives you direct access to one of the most peaceful paddling spots in the region—no hauling gear, no traffic, just step onto the beach and go.
Why French Lake?
French Lake is almost always glass-like and still, with no current—making it ideal for beginners, families with small children, or anyone who just wants a laid-back day on the water. It’s a quiet, calm lake surrounded by nature, and it’s not uncommon to see loons, turtles, ducks, and even eagles while you paddle!
And here’s the best part: the lake connects to French Lake Creek, a beautiful winding waterway that leads you to the Oromocto Rive and the Saint John River system. From there, the possibilities open right up—you can head towards the green bridge and make your way towards the Junction, or paddle to the Oromocto River, the Saint John River, and beyond. Yes, technically… you can paddle all the way from your campsite to downtown Fredericton if you're up for the challenge!
On the opposite side of our lake, there are so many beautiful routes to explore! You’ll paddle through peaceful coves and what almost looks like tree-canopied roads winding through the water. It’s absolutely breathtaking—think of it like a mix between bayous and tree-filled meadows, but clean, natural, and full of trees, flowers, and wildlife!
When to Go
First thing in the morning is pure magic. You might catch the haunting, beautiful calls of the loons echoing across the water while the sun rises over the still lake. Evening paddles are just as special—the sunsets over French Lake are absolutely unforgettable, casting golden and pink hues across the mirror surface.

Take It All In
Kayaking and canoeing on French Lake isn’t about speed—it’s about slowing down. Paddle past wildflowers lining the shore, listen to birdsong echoing over the water, and take in the peaceful rhythm of the lake. It’s one of our favourite ways to enjoy the quiet magic of the outdoors and reconnect with our planet.
