Blog 2: Beginner’s Guide to Campfire Cooking – Easy and Delicious Meal Ideas

There’s something about cooking over a campfire that just makes everything taste better. Maybe it’s the smoky flavour, the fresh air, or the fact that you’re finally getting a break from your kitchen. Whether you're camping in Oromocto with a tent, trailer, or cozy lakeside setup, campfire cooking is a must-try experience. But if you’re picturing a weekend of burnt hot dogs and half-cooked marshmallows, don’t worry—we’ve got some easy, delicious ideas to make you the campsite chef of the season!

The Basics – Campfire Cooking 101

Before we jump into recipes, let’s talk about what you need. Whether you're at a beachside campground or deep in the New Brunswick woods, you’ll want:

  • A good campfire with hot embers (not just flames).

  • Cast iron cookware, especially a big ol’ cast iron pan! (It’s tough, heats evenly, and makes you look like a pro).

  • Long tongs or skewers (unless you enjoy singed eyebrows).

  • Aluminum foil – the MVP of camp cooking.

  • A good cooler with ice packs to keep your food fresh. Because melted s’mores are amazing, but melted everything else? Not so much.

Now, onto the food!

Easy and Tasty Campfire Meals

1. Campfire French Toast Packets

Lay slices of bread in a foil packet, pour a mix of eggs, milk, cinnamon, and vanilla over them. Add sliced bananas or berries if you want! Wrap up and cook over the fire for 10–15 minutes.

2. Campfire Grilled Cheese – Because Why Not?

Butter some bread, add cheese, and grill it in a cast iron pan over the fire. It’s simple, but it hits the spot every time. Want to get fancy? Add bacon, apples, tomatoes, or even a little pesto. You can also head a pot of tomato soup over the fire for dipping!

3. Fire-Roasted Hot Dogs… With a Twist

Instead of a regular hot dog, try wrapping the dog in biscuit dough (from a tube or prepped at home) and roasting it over the fire. It gets golden brown and flaky on the outside—way better than your usual campfire cookout.

4. Tin Foil Nachos – The Ultimate Camping Snack

Who says you can’t have nachos at a campground? Layer tortilla chips, shredded cheese, and all your favourite toppings like pre-cooked taco meat, beans, veggies and jalapeños in a foil packet. Cover and place near the fire until everything is hot and melty. Top with salsa and sour cream, then dig in!

5. Campfire Banana Boats – Dessert Done Right

Take a banana, slice it open (but don’t cut all the way through), and stuff it with chocolate chips, marshmallows, and even crushed graham crackers if you'd like! Wrap it in foil and let it sit in the embers for about 5 minutes until everything is gooey and delicious. Think of it as a s’mores-inspired banana split!

Pro tip: I love to add in strawberries or raspberries for a little extra flavour!

Make the Most of Your Campfire Cooking

The key to a great camping trip isn’t just about where you pitch your tent or park your trailer—it’s about making memories. Whether you're enjoying a lakeside view, playing games at the beach, or winding down by the fire, good food makes every moment even better.
